Home Fire Sprinkler Day

Derrick Sawyer, John Waters, NJFSAB and NFSA PenJerDel Chapter Celebrate a Successful Home Fire Sprinkler Day

Members of the NFSA’s PenJerDel Chapter and the New Jersey Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board have covered a lot of ground in the past month advocating for fire sprinklers in homes.

NFSA’s Retrofit Specialist Derrick Sawyer spoke to KYW news’ Hadas Kuznits on the importance and effectiveness of residential fire sprinklers. This interview occurred before the first annual Home Fire Sprinkler Day on May 19, 2018. Derrick Sawyer, a former fire chief and fire commissioner with Philadelphia, stated that having a “three-pronged approach” to fire protection, which includes a smoke detector, fire sprinkler system, and an escape plan, increases a family’s survival odds by 85%.

Members of the NFSA’s PenJerDel Chapter also celebrated a successful Home Fire Sprinkler Day as well. PenJerDel members and NFSA’s John Waters had a successful fire sprinkler demonstration that was featured on Harrisburg’s Fox 43 News. The chapter also worked the booth at the Lancaster County Firemen’s Association’s Annual Fire Expo and spoke with hundreds of firefighters on the importance of residential fire sprinklers. Over the course of three days, the event brought in thousands of participants from all across the PenJerDel area, and even a few from as far as Virginia and even Canada!

With the first ever Home Fire Sprinkler Day being a tremendous success, the PenJerDel Chapter and the NJFSAB look forward to more events in the coming months that will allow them to educate the public and professionals on fire safety.
